Swire Properties Limited (SPL) develops and manages commercial, retail, hotel and residential properties; with a focus on mixed-use developments in prime locations at major transportation hubs.

SPL’s core Hong Kong holdings comprise Taikoo Place, Cityplaza and Pacific Place. The company also has investments in Mainland China, the United States and Singapore.

The company’s sustainable development work has been recognised at both regional and international levels. SPL’s strategy on sustainable procurement comprises the following Policies/Guidelines:

As a member of the Hong Kong Green Purchasing Charter since 2013, SPL is committed to implementing a comprehensive green purchasing strategy and policy; and will regularly assess its efforts and issue updates on progress and achievements.

Sustainable Procurement

SPL has implemented on-going sustainable procurement for the company’s projects, and in the areas of portfolio management and hotel operations, for example:

  • WHITESANDS (New Residential Development)
    • Procure concrete pavers containing recyclable content and regionally sourced, recyclable, low maintenance decorative screens.
  • Cityplaza One – Landscaped Garden Enhancement Project (Existing Building)
    • Wood decking comprising recycled materials
    • pedestal made from 100% recycled materials
    • LED outdoor garden lamps with photovoltaic cells and rechargeable batteries; and a solar, wireless and automatic irrigation system.
  • Portfolio Management
    • FSC printing and toilet paper;
    • Oxo-biodegradable plastic umbrella bags;
    • Organic and biodegradable tea bags.
  • Hotel Operations
    • FSC paper towels; biodegradable tableware;
    • Sustainable seafood according to the WWF-HK Seafood Guide and ASC-certified seafood (e.g. organic salmon);
    • Wine with the Agriculture Biologique label (certified to fulfill EU regulations for organic food);
    • Fairtrade-certified chocolates; organic tofu from social enterprises;
    • Sustainable poultry with organic certification.

SPL established a company-wide, green procurement monitoring system in 2015, which monitors the purchase of 12 types of green office products, building services equipment and building materials. The system analyses purchases against specific environmental criteria – such as whether the products have been certified or accredited as green by reputable, independent third parties. SPL uses the data collected by the monitoring system to assess its green procurement performance, and identify areas for improvement.
